The Buddha's Skull Bone in Najie
1The skull bone at the city of Xiluo, and the eight seals of eight houses
Going west sixteen yojanas, they reached the city of Xiluo on the border of the country of Najie. In the city there is a vihara that holds the skull bone (頂骨) of the Buddha, and it is adorned all over with gold leaf and the seven treasures. The king of the country honors the skull bone and holds it precious, and fearing that men might carry it off, he chose eight men from the powerful houses of the kingdom, and each of them holds one seal, and they seal it up and guard it. Early in the morning the eight men all come together, each looks at his own seal, and only then do they open the door. When the door is opened they wash their hands with scented water and bring out the skull bone of the Buddha and set it on a high seat outside the vihara. A round stand made of the seven treasures is set beneath it and a bell of glass covers it above, and all of it is adorned with pearls. The bone is of a yellowish white, about four cun across, and it rises up on top. Every day after the sun comes up, the men of the vihara climb the high tower and beat the great drum and blow the conch and strike the bronze cymbals. When the king hears it he goes to the vihara and makes his offering of flowers and incense, and when he has made his offering he bears the bone on his head in his turn and withdraws. He enters by the east gate and goes out by the west gate. Morning after morning the king makes his offering and does his reverence in this way, and only then does he attend to the government of the kingdom. The householders and the elders too make their offering first and only then see to the affairs of their houses, and they do so day after day and never grow slack from the first. When the offerings are all over, the skull bone is set back inside the vihara. Within it there is a stupa of deliverance made of the seven treasures, which opens and closes, about five chi high, and it holds the bone. Before the gate of the vihara there are men who sell flowers and incense every morning, and whoever wishes to make an offering buys what he will. The kings of many countries also send envoys to make offerings without ceasing. The ground of the vihara is forty paces square, and though the heavens should shake and the earth split, this place does not move.
2Where he offered flowers to the Buddha Dipankara
Going north from here one yojana, they reached the city of the country of Najie. This is the place where the bodhisattva long ago bought five stalks of flowers with silver coins and offered them to the Buddha Dipankara. In the city there is also a stupa of the Buddha's tooth, and offerings are made to it by the same rule as to the skull bone.
3The staff of the Buddha, and his sanghati robe
One yojana northeast of the city one comes to the mouth of a valley. The staff (錫杖) of the Buddha is there, and a vihara has been raised for it and offerings are made. The staff is made of oxhead sandalwood, about one zhang six or seven chi long, and it is kept in a wooden tube. Though a hundred men or a thousand men lift it, they cannot move it. Entering the mouth of the valley and going west for four days, there is a vihara where the sanghati robe (僧伽梨) of the Buddha is kept and offerings are made to it. When that land suffers a drought, the people of the country lead one another out and bring out the robe and do reverence and make offerings, and then the sky sends down great rain.
4The shadow in the stone chamber, which fades as you draw near
Half a yojana south of the city of Najie there is a stone chamber set against the mountain and facing southwest, and the Buddha left his shadow inside it. Looked at from ten paces and more away, it is like the true form of the Buddha, and the golden marks of his body shine out clearly; but the nearer you draw the fainter it grows, until it seems now there and now not there. The kings of many countries sent painters to copy it, but none of them could match it. The people of that country hand it down that the thousand Buddhas (千佛) will all leave their shadows in this place. About four hundred paces west of the shadow is the place where the Buddha, while he was alive, shaved his head and cut his nails. The Buddha himself raised a stupa there together with his disciples, seven or eight zhang high, to be the model for stupas in time to come, and it stands there still. Beside it there is a monastery, and in the monastery there are more than seven hundred monks. In this place there are a thousand stupas of arhats and of pratyekabuddhas.
