Bore Xin Jing (The Heart Sutra) 般若波羅蜜多心經 · Xuanzang, Chinese translation · 649 (Tang, 23rd year of the Zhenguan era) · 6 passages · 293 Chinese characters · reading time 1.2 min

Bore Xin Jing (The Heart Sutra) Complete in one volume “Form is itself emptiness, and emptiness is itself form” — a sutra that presses the wisdom of Buddhism into two hundred and sixty characters. It is the text most recited by heart in East Asia. Xuanzang turned it into Chinese after his return from India.

1Seeing That the Five Aggregates Are All Empty

When the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara was practicing the deep Prajnaparamita, he saw that the five aggregates (五蘊) are all empty, and he crossed beyond every suffering and calamity.

2Form Is Emptiness, and Emptiness Is Form

"Shariputra! Form (色) is not different from emptiness (空), and emptiness is not different from form. Form is itself emptiness, and emptiness is itself form. Feeling (受), perception (想), formation (行), and consciousness (識) are also like this.

3Neither Arising nor Ceasing

"Shariputra! All these dharmas bear the mark of emptiness. They neither arise nor cease, are neither defiled nor pure, neither increase nor decrease.

Therefore in emptiness there is no form, and no feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness. There is no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind. There is no color, sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma. There is no realm of the eye, and so on to no realm of mind and consciousness.

There is no ignorance and no end of ignorance, and so on to no old age and death and no end of old age and death. There is no suffering (苦), no cause of it (集), no ending of it (滅), and no path (道). There is no knowing, and there is nothing attained.

4With No Hindrance, There Is No Fear

"Because the bodhisattva has nothing to attain, he relies on the Prajnaparamita, and his mind is without hindrance. Because it is without hindrance, he has no fear. He leaves far behind all upside-down and vain thinking, and he reaches nirvana at last.

The buddhas of the three ages also relied on the Prajnaparamita, and so they attained anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, the unsurpassed, right, and universal awakening.

5The Great and Wondrous Mantra

"Therefore know this. The Prajnaparamita is the great and wondrous mantra, the great and bright mantra, the unsurpassed mantra, the mantra beyond compare. It can take away every suffering. It is true and not false."

6Gate Gate Paragate

Therefore the mantra of the Prajnaparamita is spoken, and the mantra says,

"Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha"

— Let us go, let us go, let us go to the far shore. Let us all go together to the far shore. O awakening, may it be accomplished.
