Chapter 44 — Setting up a warning立戒
1Which is closer, name or body
Which is closer, your name or your body?
note 2
Hold your name high and love high places, and your body is surely left far off.
When the name is made, the body withdraws.
2Which is more, body or goods
Which is more, your body or your goods?
note 2
Covet goods and never know when you have had enough, and your body is surely made less.
When goods are many, they harm the body.
3Which is the sickness, gain or loss
Which is the sickness, gaining or losing?
note 2
If you gain much profit and lose your body, which of them is the sickness?
To love gaining profit becomes a sickness in one's conduct.
4Love too much and you will spend greatly
So if you love too much, you will surely spend greatly. If you store up much, you will surely lose heavily.
note 3
If you love too much, you do not pass through to things; if you store up much, you do not share with things. Then many come seeking and many come striking, and you become a sickness to things. So you spend greatly and lose heavily.
If you love women's beauty too much, you spend your spirit; if you love goods too much, you meet disaster and grief. What you hold dear is little and what you lose is much, and so it says that you spend greatly.
While alive, one stores up much in the storehouse; once dead, one stores up much in the grave. While alive there is the worry of being struck and robbed; once dead there is the worry of the grave being dug open and the coffin ransacked.
5Know what is enough and you will not be disgraced
Know what is enough and you will not be disgraced. Know when to stop and you will not be in danger. So you can last long.
note 3
One who knows what is enough cuts off profit and casts away desire, and so does not bring disgrace upon the body.
If you know the place to stop, goods and profit do not bind the body and sounds and colors do not trouble the ears and eyes, so the body is not in danger.
When a person knows when to stop and what is enough, blessing and emolument rest with them. One who governs the body does not wear out the spirit, and one who governs the state does not make the people clamorous, and so one can last long.
