Chapter 79 — Relying on the contract任契

Daodejing (The Classic of the Way and Virtue) 道德經 · Laozi, with commentaries by Wang Bi and Heshang Gong · 4th–3rd century BC (Wang Bi's commentary, 3rd century AD) · 5 passages · 40 Chinese characters · reading time 0.2 min

Daodejing (The Classic of the Way and Virtue) Dejing (The Classic of Virtue) Eighty-one chapters, five thousand characters. The silk manuscripts that came out of the tombs differ in their characters from the recension in use today, so there are many places where the reading of one and the same passage divides. Wang Bi reads the book as philosophy; Heshang Gong reads it as governing and the nurture of life.

1Settle a great grudge and some grudge remains

Settle a great grudge and some grudge is sure to remain,

note 3

He did not manage the contract clearly, and so a great grudge had already come about. Even settling it with virtue does not undo the hurt, and so some grudge remains.

To put to death the one who has killed, and to punish the one who has wounded — this is requiting each in kind.

One who relies on punishment loses the hearts of the people, and so a remnant of resentment is bound to reach even the good.

2The sage holds the left half of the contract

so how can this be called good? That is why the sage holds the left half of the contract,

note 3

The left half of the contract guards against what gives rise to grudges.

The meaning is that if a single person sighs, the mind of Heaven is already lost; how then can settling resentment be called good?

In antiquity the sage held the left half of the contract and matched it as a token of trust. There were no written documents or statutes, so a notched tally was matched to serve as a pledge.

3One with virtue takes charge of the contract

and does not press others. One with virtue takes charge of the contract,

note 3

One who has virtue keeps his mind on the contract; he does not keep his mind on pressing others once a grudge has arisen.

He merely takes the notched tally as a pledge; he does not call others to account over other matters.

A ruler who has virtue does no more than see to the trust of the contract.

4One without virtue takes charge of collecting

and one without virtue takes charge of collecting.

note 2

Che (徹) is to take charge of other people's faults.

A ruler without virtue turns his back on the trust of the contract and watches for the faults of others.

5The way of heaven is always with the good

The way of heaven holds no one close. It is always with the good.

note 1

The Way of Heaven has neither near nor far; it is with the good alone — that is, with the one who keeps to the contract.
