Jingang Jing (The Diamond Sutra) Complete in one volume "All marks that exist are empty and false" — a sutra that teaches one to give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere. It follows, just as they stand, the thirty-two sections into which Prince Zhaoming divided it. It is told that Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, heard one line of this sutra and set his heart on awakening.

1Subhuti Asks

Then the elder Subhuti, who was in the great assembly, rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms, and reverently addressed the Buddha.

"Rare and wonderful, World-Honored One! The Tathagata guards and cares well for all the bodhisattvas, and entrusts his charge well to all the bodhisattvas. World-Honored One! When a good man or a good woman sets their mind on anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, where should they dwell, and how should they subdue their mind?"

Interlinear notes 1

The elder Good Manifestation (善現), that is Subhuti, asks the Buddha for his teaching.

2Dwell in This Way

The Buddha said, "Good, good. Subhuti! It is as you say: the Tathagata guards and cares well for all the bodhisattvas, and entrusts his charge well to all the bodhisattvas. Listen closely now, and I will speak for you. When a good man or a good woman sets their mind on anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, they should dwell in this way and subdue their mind in this way."

3I Would Gladly Hear It

"Yes, World-Honored One! I would gladly hear it."
