1A country on hills and islands

Wa is the old country of Wano. It lies fourteen thousand li from the capital, in the great sea southeast of Silla, and the people live leaning on the hills and the islands. From east to west it is five months' journey, from north to south three months' journey. Age after age it has had dealings with China. In that country they dwell with no walled towns; they make their fences of wood and their roofs of grass. On all four sides are small islands, more than fifty countries, and all of them are attached to it. The king's surname is Ame (阿每氏). He has set up an ildaesol (一大率) to inspect the several countries, and they all fear him and cleave to him. The offices they have set up are twelve grades.

2The customs of Wa

Those who bring a suit go forward crawling on the ground. In that land women are many and men are few. They have writing in some measure, and in their custom they revere the law of the Buddha. All of them go barefoot, and they cover themselves before and behind with a width of cloth. Men of rank wear a cap of brocade, and the common people all wear a mallet topknot, with no cap and no belt. The women wear a skirt of a single color and a jacket long at the waist. They bind their hair behind and wear a silver flower eight chon long, with several sprays on the left and on the right, to make plain the grades of high and low. The fashion of their clothing is much like that of Silla.

3Gao Biaoren fails in courtesy

In the fifth year of Zhenguan they sent an envoy and offered the products of their land. Taizong pitied them for the length of the road, and ordered the offices concerned not to make them send tribute every year. He also sent Gao Biaoren, the prefect of Xinzhou, to go with the tally and comfort them. Biaoren had no gift for settling distant peoples. He quarreled over ceremony with the king's son, and came back without proclaiming the command of the court. In the twenty-second year they again sent up a memorial in company with Silla, to ask after the emperor's health.
