Haedong Goseungjeon (Lives of Eminent Monks of the Land East of the Sea) Complete in one volume The oldest collection of monks' lives that survives in Korea. Gakhun made it in 1215 at the king's command, sixty-six years before the Samguk Yusa. It carries the lives of eighteen men — Sundo, the first to come to Goguryeo; Malananta, who crossed over to Baekje; Yeomchok, from whose severed neck white milk is said to have sprung in Silla; Wongwang, who set out the five precepts for the world; and Ariyabalma and Hyeeop, who stayed at Nalanda and ended their days there. How King Jinheung raised up the wonhwa and established the hwarang is set down here as well.

1Ariyabalma — He crossed the Congling range and died at Nalanda Monastery

The monk Ariyabalma (阿離耶跋摩) awoke to the truth alone by his own spirit and wisdom, and his form and face were unlike those of the crowd. He was the first to go from Silla into China. He sought out teachers and asked to be taught further, and no place was too far for him to go and take part. He rested looking down into dark ravines, and he climbed up over the many heavens. He did not mean only to be a model for his own time. He meant also to shape a ford for the ages to come.

His will was set hard on seeing all, and he did not shrink from a road that stretched far away. At last he set out to seek the Law in India in the west, and he climbed far up the Congling range (葱嶺). He searched out what was strange and probed what was fine, and looked one by one on the traces of the holy ones. His long-held wish was now full, but his money and his food ran out just then. So he stayed at Nalanda Monastery, and before long he died there.

At that time Go □ 〔A character is missing here.〕 gave himself wholly to his study and stayed at Bodhi Monastery, and Hyeongak and Hyeonjo reached Daegak Monastery. These four men named above all made this journey during the Zhenguan era. Together they planted an excellent cause, and they made the seed of Shakyamuni rich. Far away they took leave of their old land and went to see the ways of India. They raised a fine name in the east and in the west, and let a great blessing down to what has no end. If a man were not of great heart and of the highest rank, how could he have any part in this?

By the chronological record it seems that he set out for the countries of the west together with the Tripitaka master Xuanzang, but which year it was is not known.
