The monk Hyeondae (玄大) is Beom (梵). He was a man of Silla. His dharma name was Salbasinbo (薩婆愼菩), and Jeba (提婆). 〔In the language of Tang, Ilchejicheon (一切智天).〕 From his childhood he was deep and still, and he had the look of a grown man. He ate nothing rank, and he did not □□□□□□□□□□ either. 〔Characters are missing here.〕
Early on he put out in a ship and went to Tang, and in his learning he held to nothing fixed, opening what was hidden and going to the end of what was fine. In the Yonghui era of Gaozong he went at last to Middle India and made reverence before the Bodhi tree. He went as a lion goes, and sought no companion. He shook the golden staff of the five-storey tower, and he looked up at the jewelled stairway of the three roads. All that he longed for from afar, and the hardship and danger he passed through, and the lands and manners he saw one by one, cannot be set down in full.
He then hung up his staff at Daegak Monastery, looked closely into the sutras and the treatises, and made a full survey of the customs of many regions. Afterwards he returned to Zhendan (震旦) and spread the teaching of the Law abroad, and his hidden merit became plain. High and high indeed is the work he accomplished.
2In praise — They looked on the farthest lands as on their own streets
贊曰:此上數人邈若青徼。徑入中華。追法顯。玄奘之逸跡。朅來絕域。視如里巷。比之奉使張騫蘇武之類乎。
In praise it is said:
These several men above came straight into China from places as far off as the blue borderlands, and they followed the outstanding tracks of Faxian and Xuanzang. They went and came in the farthest countries, and looked on them as on the lanes of their own village. Shall we set this beside Zhang Qian and Su Wu and their like, who went out as envoys?
