For the final sound the initial letters are used again. When ㅇ is written joined beneath a labial letter it becomes a light labial sound. To write initial letters together, they are written side by side, and the same holds for the final sounds. ㆍㅡㅗㅜㅛㅠ are written attached beneath the initial letter, and ㅣㅏㅓㅑㅕ are written attached to its right. In every case a letter must be joined with others before it forms a sound.

Adding one dot to the left gives the high tone, two dots the rising tone, and no dot the even tone. The entering tone adds dots in the same way, but is quick and abrupt.

In the Chinese readings of the characters the dental sounds are divided into front-of-the-teeth (齒頭) and true-teeth (正齒). The letters ᅎᅔᅏᄼᄽ are used for the front-of-the-teeth sounds, and the letters ᅐᅕᅑᄾᄿ for the true-teeth sounds. The molar, lingual, labial and guttural letters are used throughout for the Chinese readings as well.
