Volume Four
1Traveling on through the night, they part — Kokochu is picked up
Temujin said, "What Borte says is right." So they did not make camp, but traveled on through the night. On the way they passed the place where the Taichiud were. Those Taichiud started up in alarm and that same night went back instead to Jamukha. In their camp they left behind a small boy named Kokochu. Temujin's men picked him up and gave him to Mother Hoelun to raise.
2Many branches leave Jamukha and gather

They traveled on through that night, and when they looked about at daybreak, three brothers of the Jalair clan, Khachiun, Kharakhai and Kharaldai, the Tokhuraun brothers, had come along with them. Five brothers of the Tarkhud clan, Khadaan Dalduurkhan and the rest, came as well. Menggetu of the Kiyat clan came with his son Onggur and others, and with them men of the two clans Changshiud and Bayaud. Khorchi and Usun the elder and Kokochos of one branch of the Baarin came, and with them a whole company of the Menen Baarin clan.
3The dream of Khorchi — the white cow and the hornless ox
Khorchi came and said, "Our wise ancestor Bodonchar took a woman captive, and from her womb Jamukha was born. Our ancestor should never have parted from Jamukha. But a spirit has told me, and it made me see this with my own eyes. A pale white milk cow came to Jamukha and circled about him, and she struck his house and his cart and broke off one of her horns. From Jamukha's side that cow flung up the dust and bellowed, saying, 'Jamukha, give me back my horn.' And a hornless ox dragged the great stake of a tent and came bellowing along the cart road that Temujin travels, saying, 'Heaven and earth have taken counsel, and they have made Temujin the lord of the country. I carry the country and bring it to him.' A spirit told me and made me see it with my eyes. Temujin, I tell you these words. If you become the lord of the country, how will you make me glad?" Temujin said, "If it truly comes to pass, I will make you a commander of ten thousand." Khorchi said, "I have told you all this reason, and if you give me only a command of ten thousand, what gladness is there in that? Give me the ten thousand, and let me choose thirty of the fairest women in the country for my wives. And whatever I say, you must listen to it all."
4Altan and Khuchar and Seche Beki come as well
Khunan and the others of the Geniges clan came too, and Daritai Otchigin, and Mulkhalkhu of the Jadaran clan, and men of the Sakhait clan, and Sorkhatu Jurki of the Jurkin clan, who brought his sons Seche Beki and Taichu, and Khuchar Beki, the son of Nekun Taishi, and Altan Otchigin, the son of Khutula the emperor. All of them, with their whole companies, parted from Jamukha. They came and joined Temujin while he was camped in the land of Ait Kharakhana on the little river Kimurkha. From there they moved on to the Senggur River in the land of Gurelgu, and camped by the lake named Koko Naur in the land of Khara Jirugen.
5They name him Chinggis and set him up as emperor
Altan and Khuchar and Seche Beki and the rest took counsel together and said to Temujin, "We will set you up and make you emperor. If you become emperor, then when the enemies are many we will be your vanguard, and whatever fair women and good horses we take we will bring them all to you. When we drive the wild beasts, we will go out first and ring the beasts about and drive them to you. If we disobey your command when we fight, or spoil your affairs when there is no fighting, then cut us off from our wives and our goods and cast us away in a land where no smoke rises." So they swore, and they set Temujin up and made him emperor, and called him Chinggis.
6Each man is given his charge
After Chinggis became emperor, he had Ogelen, the younger brother of Boorchu, with Khachiun and Jedei and Dokholkhu, those four, carry the bow and arrows. He put Onggur and Suiketu and Khadaan Dalduurkhan, those three, in charge of the food and drink. He put Degei in charge of herding the sheep, and Kuchugur in charge of building the carts, and Dodai in charge of all the people of the household. He had Khubilai and Chilgutai and Kharkhai Tokhuraun, those three, carry the sword together with his younger brother Khasar. He put his younger brother Belgutei and Kharaldai Tokhuraun, those two, in charge of handling the horses, and Taichiudai Khutu and Morichi and Mutkhalkhu, those three, in charge of herding the horse herds. He charged Arkhai Khasar and Takhai and Sukegai and Chaurkhan, those four, to be like his far arrows and his near arrows. Subeetei the brave said, "I will gather things in like a mouse and heap them up like a crow. I will cover and guard you like the felt that covers a horse, and shield you like the felt that keeps out the wind. Let me try to do it so."
7Boorchu and Jelme are made elders of the multitude
There Chinggis said again to Boorchu and Jelme, the two of them, "Long ago, when I had no companion, you two were the first to become my companions. My heart has not forgotten it. Now be the elders of all these people." Then he said to the multitude, "You left Jamukha and thought of me and came to me. If heaven and earth keep us, you men of old days will all in later times be my companions in good fortune." So he spoke, and he gave every one of them a charge.
8Tooril says that it is right
After Chinggis became emperor, he sent Dakhai and Sukegai to Tooril, the emperor of the Kereit clan. Tooril said, "That Temujin has become emperor is a very good thing. How would you Dadan get on if you had no emperor? Do not spoil the purpose you agreed on at the first." This was the word he sent back.
9Jamukha rebukes Altan and Khuchar
Chinggis also sent Arkhai Khasar and Chaurkhan to Jamukha. Jamukha said, "Say this to Altan and Khuchar, who stand before Temujin. 'Temujin my anda and I, we two, were parted because you set us against each other. When we were in one place at the first, why did you not set Temujin up and make him emperor? Now, with what thought have you set him up and made him emperor? You ought to set the heart of Temujin my anda at rest. Be good companions before Temujin.'"
10Taichar seizes a horse herd and is shot through the backbone
Afterward Taichar, the younger brother of Jamukha, was living in the land of Olegei Bulakh before Mount Jalama, and Jochi Darmala, a companion of Chinggis, was living in the land of Saari. Taichar seized the horse herd of Jochi Darmala and drove it off. His companions did not dare to give chase, so Jochi Darmala followed the trail alone. He came to the horse herd at night, lay flat on a horse's mane, and shot Taichar so that his backbone was cut through. Then he drove his own horses back.
11The battle of the thirteen companies — the seventy cauldrons
Because he had shot his younger brother Taichar dead, Jamukha led his own clan and thirteen tribes, thirty thousand men in all, and crossed the pass of Alaud Turkhaud to fight Chinggis. At that time Chinggis was in the land of Gurelgu, and two men of the Ikires clan, Mulke Totakh and Boroldai, came and told him. When Chinggis knew of it, he too raised thirty thousand men from his thirteen companies and went to meet Jamukha, and they drew up their lines facing each other in the land of Dalan Baljud. Chinggis was pushed back by Jamukha and withdrew, and he camped in a narrow place in the land of Jerene on the Onon River. Jamukha then turned back, and on his way he boiled the great lords who were in the land of Chinos in seventy cauldrons, and he cut off the head of Neudai Chagaan and dragged it away at a horse's tail.
12Jurchedei and Khuildar come — the quarrel at the feast
After Jamukha had gone back, Jurchedei of the Uruud clan and Khuildar of the Mangkhud clan each led his own clan, left Jamukha, and came to Taizu. Munglik of the Khongkhotan clan came as well, leading his seven sons. Taizu rejoiced that these people had come, and he held a feast in the forest on the bank of the Onon River. First he set out a jar of mare's milk for Hoelun and Khasar and Seche Beki and the rest, and then he set out another jar for Ebegei, the younger mother of Seche Beki. At this the two ladies Khorijin and Khuurchin said, "Why is nothing set before us first?" and they beat Shikiur the cook. Shikiur said, "Because Yesugei Baatur and Nekun Taishi are dead, I am beaten like this by others." So he spoke, and wept aloud.
13Buri Boko cuts the shoulder of Belgutei
At that feast Taizu had Belgutei hold the horses outside and keep order there, and on the side of the Jurkin, Buri Boko was to keep order. A man of the Khatagin came and stole a halter rope, and Belgutei caught him. Buri Boko took the man's part and cut and wounded the shoulder of Belgutei. Belgutei made nothing of it and went about bleeding. Taizu saw him from under the shade of a tree and asked, "How is it that he has done such a thing to you?" Belgutei said, "I am hurt, but not very badly. Do not let the brothers hate one another on my account."
14He pays them back with a tree branch and a milk pestle
Taizu would not listen. He broke off a branch of a tree, and he pulled out the wooden pestle for stirring mare's milk, and he fought with them. He beat the Jurkin, and he took back the two ladies Khorijin and Khuurchin. When they came asking for peace, he gave the two ladies back. Afterward, while envoys were going back and forth, the Great Jin declared that Megujin Seultu and the other Tatars would not obey its commands, and had Chancellor Wanyan lead an army out to put them down. He came up the Ulja River in pursuit of Megujin Seultu. Taizu learned of it.
15With the Jin they strike the Tatars on the Ulja River
Taizu said, "In days past the Tatars did away with our grandfather and our father, and there is that enmity. Now, taking this chance, we can strike them from both sides." So he sent a man to say to Tooril, "The Jin have now sent Wanyan, and he is coming up the Ulja River in pursuit of Megujin and the other Tatars. They are the very house of the enemies who did away with our grandfather and our father. Father, help me, and let us strike them from both sides." Tooril promised him horsemen, made ready for three days, and came himself. Taizu also sent a man to Seche Beki and Taichu of the Jurkin clan to tell them of this purpose of vengeance and to ask them to come and help. He waited six days and they did not come. Then Taizu led his army with Tooril down along the Ulja River, and with Wanyan he struck the Tatars from both sides. At that time the Tatars had set up a stockade in the land of Khusutu Shituen. Taizu and Tooril broke it, and they killed Megujin Seultu of the Tatars.
16He receives the name jaukhuri, and Tooril the name wang — Shigi Khutukhu is found
When Wanyan of the Jin knew that Taizu and Tooril had broken the stockade of the Tatars and killed Megujin and the rest, he rejoiced greatly. He gave Taizu the name of jaukhuri, and Tooril the name of wang. Wanyan said further to Taizu, "The killing of Megujin and the rest was truly done with your help. When I go back I will report it to the emperor of the Jin, and have you made a pacification commissioner with a greater name still." When he had said this he went back from there. Taizu and Tooril took the Tatars captive between them, and each of them went home. While the soldiers of Taizu were in the camp of the Tatars, they picked up a small boy who wore a gold ring in his nose and a bib lined with sable woven through with gold thread, and they gave him to Mother Hoelun. Hoelun said, "Surely he is the son of a man of good stock." She named him Shigi Khutukhu, and made him her sixth son.
17He strikes the Jurkin — Seche Beki and Taichu are put to death
The camp of the old and the young that Taizu had left behind lay on the shore of Lake Khariltu, and there the Jurkin stripped the clothes from fifty men and killed ten. A man came and told Taizu. Taizu was greatly angered and said, "Why do we suffer such things from the Jurkin? Before, at the feast in the forest on the Onon River, their man beat the cook and cut the shoulder of Belgutei. This time I asked them to take vengeance with me for the sake of our ancestors, and they did not even come. They leaned on the enemy, and now they have become the enemy themselves." So he led out his horsemen to put down the Jurkin. He came to the land of Doloan Boldaud before the Kerulen River and took the people of the Jurkin captive. Only Seche Beki and Taichu, the two of them, fled with nothing on their bodies to the mouth of Teletu, and Taizu caught them. Taizu asked, "What did you say to me before?" The two said, "We did not keep the words we ourselves spoke." Then they stretched out their necks to take the blow, and Taizu killed them.
18Mukhali and Boroul enter his service
After Taizu had killed Seche Beki and Taichu, he returned to the camp of the Jurkin and moved the people of the Jurkin away. At that time Telegetu Bayan of the Jalair clan had three sons. He had his eldest son, Guun Ua, bring his own two sons Mukhali and Bukha to present them to Taizu, and he gave them, saying, "Let them be servants forever. If they leave your door, cut the sinews of their heels and cut out their hearts." He had his second son, Chilaun Khaichi, bring his own two sons Tunge and Khashi to present them as well, saying, "Let them keep your golden door. If they leave it, take their lives." His third son, Jebke, he gave to Khasar, the younger brother of Taizu. Jebke found a small boy in the camp of the Jurkin, named Boroul, and offered him to Mother Hoelun.
19The four boys the mother raised — for eyes and for ears
The four boys Hoelun got at one time and another, Kuchu and Kokochu and Shigi Khutukhu and Boroul, she raised so that they would be eyes for her sons to see with by day and ears for them to hear with by night.
20How the name Jurkin came about
This is how the Jurkin clan came about. At the first, Khabul the emperor had seven sons, and the eldest was named Okin Barkhakh. Because he was the eldest, he chose out from among the people the men who had daring and strength, who were hard and brave and could shoot the bow, and made them follow him. Wherever they went they broke all before them, and no one could stand against them. For that reason they were called Jurkin. Taizu subdued this clan too, and made their people his own people.
21The backbone of Buri Boko is broken
One day Taizu had Buri Boko and Belgutei wrestle. Before this, when Belgutei wrestled with Buri Boko, Buri Boko had thrown him with one hand and one foot and held him so that he could not move. This time Buri Boko pretended that his strength did not match Belgutei's, and fell. Belgutei pressed him down on one side and looked back at Taizu. Taizu bit his lower lip. At this Belgutei understood his meaning. He pressed his knee on the man's back, took hold of his neck with both hands, and bent him backward with all his strength, and so broke his backbone. Buri Boko said, "I was not beaten at all. Because I feared Chinggis I pretended that my strength did not match his, and now I lose my life for it." At the first, among the seven sons of Khabul the emperor, the eldest was named Okin Barkhakh, and the second was named Bartan Baatur. The son of Bartan was Yesugei, and the son of Yesugei is Taizu. The third was named Khutukhtu Mongker, and the son of Mongker was Buri Boko. Because Buri Boko held himself apart from the descendants of Bartan and kept company with the fierce descendants of Barkhakh, though he had a strength that a whole country could not match, in the end he did not escape dying with his back broken.
