Six Secret Teachings, Martial Teaching — Opening the Way六韜 發啟
1All under Heaven is not the realm of one man but the realm of all under Heaven
King Wen was at Feng. He summoned Taigong and said, "Alas, the king of Shang has come to the height of cruelty and kills the guiltless. Sir, help me, I pray, in caring for the people. What is to be done?" Taigong said, "Let my lord cultivate his virtue and bend low before the worthy, be kind to the people, and watch the way of Heaven. While there is no calamity in the way of Heaven, you cannot be the first to raise the call. While there is no disaster in the way of men, you cannot be the first to lay plans. Only when you have surely seen a calamity of Heaven, and seen a disaster of men as well, can you lay plans. You must see his bright side and then his dark side, and only then do you know his heart. You must see what is outside and then what is within, and only then do you know his purpose. You must see what is far from him and then what is close to him, and only then do you know his feeling. Walk his road, and the road can be reached. Follow his gate, and the gate can be entered. Set up his rites, and the rites can be completed. Contend with his strength, and the strength can be overcome. A whole victory does not fight, and a great army takes no wound, and so it goes through to the spirits. Subtle indeed! Subtle indeed! Those who share the same sickness save one another, those who share the same feeling complete one another, those who share the same hatred help one another, those who share the same liking run to one another. So one wins without armor and weapons, attacks without ram or engine, and holds without moat or trench. Great wisdom is not wise, great counsel does not plan, great courage is not brave, great profit does not profit. He who benefits all under Heaven, all under Heaven opens to him. He who harms all under Heaven, all under Heaven closes against him. All under Heaven is not the realm of one man. It is the realm of all under Heaven. To take all under Heaven is like chasing a wild beast, for all under Heaven have a mind to share the meat. It is like crossing in the same boat, for if they cross they all share the gain, and if they founder they all share the harm. If it is so, then all open to him and none close against him. He who takes nothing from the people is the one who gains the people. He who takes nothing from the state is the one who gains the state. He who takes nothing from all under Heaven is the one who gains all under Heaven. Take nothing from the people, and the people benefit him. Take nothing from the state, and the state benefits him. Take nothing from all under Heaven, and all under Heaven benefits him. So the Way lies in what cannot be seen, the work lies in what cannot be heard, and the victory lies in what cannot be known. Subtle indeed! Subtle indeed! When the bird of prey is about to strike, it flies low and folds its wings. When the fierce beast is about to spring, it lays back its ears and crouches down. When the sage is about to move, he is sure to wear a foolish look. Now that Yin Shang — the many mouths bewitch one another, all is confusion and haze, and the love of women has no end. These are the signs of a state about to perish. I look at their fields, and weeds are beating the grain. I look at their multitude, and the crooked are beating the straight. I look at their officials, and they are cruel and savage, they break the law and throw the punishments into disorder, and neither high nor low perceives it. This is the hour of a state about to perish. When the great brightness comes forth, the myriad things are all lit. When the great righteousness comes forth, the myriad things all gain. When the great army comes forth, the myriad things all submit. Great indeed is the virtue of the sage, who alone hears and alone sees. Joyful indeed!"
