King Wu asked Taigong, "When a king raises troops, is there a rule for the kinds and the numbers of the three armies' gear and of the tools for attack and defense?" Taigong said, "Great is my lord's question. The tools for attack and defense each have their kinds, and this is the great awe of an army." King Wu said, "I should like to hear it." Taigong said, "The great numbers for using troops, when ten thousand armored soldiers are led, are these by the rule. Of the great assault carriage (武衝大扶胥), thirty-six chariots. Able men, strong crossbows, and spears and halberds make its wings. Twenty-four men to a chariot, and they push it on wheels eight feet across. On the chariot stand a banner and a drum. The art of war calls it the Thunderclap (震駭). It breaks a firm formation and beats a strong enemy. Of the great shield carriage with spears and halberds (武翼大櫓), seventy-two. Able men, strong crossbows, and spears and halberds make its wings, on wheels five feet across, with a windlass and a repeating crossbow set beside. It breaks a firm formation and beats a strong enemy. Of the small shield carriage (提翼小櫓), one hundred and forty-four, with a windlass and a repeating crossbow set beside, on deer-cart wheels. It breaks a firm formation and beats a strong enemy. Of the great carriage with the Great Yellow triple-linked crossbow (大黃參連弩), thirty-six chariots. Able men, strong crossbows, and spears and halberds make its wings, with the Flying Duck (飛鳧) and the Lightning Shadow (電影) set beside. The Flying Duck has a red shaft and white feathers, and its head is of bronze. The Lightning Shadow has a green shaft and red feathers, and its head is of iron. By day crimson silk six feet long and six inches wide is used for a flash of light, and by night white silk six feet long and six inches wide is used for a shooting star. It breaks a firm formation and beats foot soldiers and horsemen. Of the great assault chariot (大扶胥衝車), thirty-six. Mantis warriors ride on it together. It can strike lengthwise and strike crosswise, and it can beat the enemy. The baggage chariot against raiding horsemen (輜車騎寇) is also called the Lightning Chariot (電車). The art of war calls it the lightning strike. It breaks a firm formation, beats foot soldiers and horsemen, and stops the enemy from coming by night. Of the light chariot with spears and halberds, one hundred and sixty. Three mantis warriors ride on it together. The art of war calls it the thunderbolt strike (霆擊). Flying hooks (飛鉤), eight inches long, the hook point four inches long, with handles six feet and more, twelve hundred of them. They are thrown into the enemy's crowd. For the three armies holding a defense, the wooden mantis carriage with sword blades (木螳蜋劍刃扶胥), twenty feet wide, one hundred and twenty of them. It is also called the horse-barrier (行馬). On level ground foot soldiers beat chariots and horsemen with it. Wooden caltrops (木蒺藜), two feet five inches above the ground, one hundred and twenty of them. They beat foot soldiers and horsemen, hold back a cornered enemy, and bar a rout. The short assault carriage with turning axle and with spears and halberds (軸旋短衝矛戟扶胥), one hundred and twenty of them. On narrow roads and small paths and where the ground is sunken, triple-linked iron chains, one hundred and twenty of them. For holding the rampart gate, twelve small shield carriages with spears and halberds, with a windlass and a repeating crossbow set beside. For crossing ditches and trenches, one span of the flying bridge (飛橋), fifteen feet wide and twenty feet and more long, fitted with eight swivel joints and pulleys, and drawn out with ringed cable. For crossing great water, the flying river bridge (飛江), fifteen feet wide and twenty feet and more long, eight of them, drawn out with ringed cable. The floating iron mantis (天浮鐵螳蜋), square within and round without, four feet and more across, with a ring net set beside, thirty-two of them. To spread the flying river bridge with the floaters and cross the great sea is called the heavenly pool (天潢), also called the heavenly boat (天舡). When staying in mountain forest or open field, a tiger fence of brushwood is woven for the camp: ringed iron chains twenty feet and more long, twelve hundred of them; great ringed cables four inches thick and forty feet and more long, six hundred of them; middling ringed cables two inches thick and forty feet and more long, two hundred of them; small ringed cords twenty feet and more long, twelve thousand of them. When it rains, the boards on top of the carts are covered, and hemp is woven so that the pieces lock together, four feet wide and forty feet and more long, one set to a cart, drawn out with iron pegs. Great axes for felling trees, eight catties in weight, with handles three feet and more, three hundred of them. Pickaxes (棨钁), the blade six inches wide, with handles five feet and more, three hundred of them. Bronze tampers, five feet and more long, three hundred of them. Eagle-claw iron rakes with square breasts, with handles seven feet and more, three hundred of them. Iron forks with square breasts, with handles seven feet and more, three hundred of them. Two-pronged iron forks with square breasts, with handles seven feet and more, three hundred of them. Great sickles for cutting grass and trees, with handles seven feet and more, three hundred of them. Great shield knives, eight catties in weight, with handles six feet, three hundred of them. Iron pegs with rings, three feet and more long, three hundred of them. Great mallets for driving pegs, five catties in weight, with handles two feet and more, one hundred and twenty of them. For ten thousand armored soldiers there are six thousand strong crossbows, two thousand halberds and shields, two thousand spears and shields, and three hundred skilled hands to mend the attacking gear and sharpen the weapons. These are the great numbers for raising troops and for the army's use." King Wu said, "It is right."
