Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) Complete in one volume "The months and days are the travelers of a hundred generations, and the years that come and go are travelers too" — the travel record of Bashō, who left Edo at forty-six and walked Ōshū and Hokuriku for five months. In the summer grass he sees the dreams of warriors, in the rock he hears the voice of the cicadas soaking in, and under one roof he likens the sleeping women of pleasure to bush clover and the moon. Wherever the prose comes to rest, a haiku is set down. Beside the pilgrim records of Faxian, Xuanzang, and Hyecho, this is one more road in this library.

1The Shirakawa Barrier — Here My Traveler's Heart Was Settled

The unsettled days had piled up, and then I came to the Shirakawa Barrier, and for the first time my traveler's heart was settled. "Somehow I would send word to the capital" — the man of old who looked for a messenger had reason for it.

Among them all, this barrier is one of the three barriers, and those who love poetry have set their hearts on it. With the autumn wind left in my ears and the red leaves before my eyes, the treetops of green leaves I saw were the more moving. The deutzia flowers were white, and the wild rose bloomed along with them, so that I felt as though I were crossing through snow. Kiyosuke set down with his brush, they say, such things as how a man of old straightened his cap and changed his dress.
