Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) Complete in one volume "The months and days are the travelers of a hundred generations, and the years that come and go are travelers too" — the travel record of Bashō, who left Edo at forty-six and walked Ōshū and Hokuriku for five months. In the summer grass he sees the dreams of warriors, in the rock he hears the voice of the cicadas soaking in, and under one roof he likens the sleeping women of pleasure to bush clover and the moon. Wherever the prose comes to rest, a haiku is set down. Beside the pilgrim records of Faxian, Xuanzang, and Hyecho, this is one more road in this library.

I crossed at the Tsukinowa ferry and came out at a post town called Se no Ue. The old site of Satō Shōji lies about a ri and a half away, at the foot of the mountains on the left. I heard it was at Sabano in the village of Iizuka, and asking again and again I went on, and at a place called Maruyama I found the traces of the main gate and the rest. This was the old mansion of the Shōji.

I looked as the people there showed me, and my tears fell. In an old temple beside it the monuments of that one house remain, and among them the markers of the two daughters-in-law move pity first of all. Though they were women, their brave names have been heard of in the world, I thought, and the stone of falling tears is not so far away after all.

I went into the temple and asked for tea, and here they keep Yoshitsune's long sword and Benkei's pack chest as treasures.

The pack chest too and the sword too — / deck them out in the fifth month, paper banners
