Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) Complete in one volume "The months and days are the travelers of a hundred generations, and the years that come and go are travelers too" — the travel record of Bashō, who left Edo at forty-six and walked Ōshū and Hokuriku for five months. In the summer grass he sees the dreams of warriors, in the rock he hears the voice of the cicadas soaking in, and under one roof he likens the sleeping women of pleasure to bush clover and the moon. Wherever the prose comes to rest, a haiku is set down. Beside the pilgrim records of Faxian, Xuanzang, and Hyecho, this is one more road in this library.

1Kanazawa — move, you too, grave mound

I crossed Mount Unohana and the valley of Kurikara and came to Kanazawa on the fifteenth day of the seventh month.

Here there was a certain merchant who goes back and forth from Ōsaka, and I shared his lodging. There was a man called Isshō, known here and there as one who loved this way of haikai, and there were people in the world who knew him, and I had been waiting to meet him. But they said that he had died young last winter, and at the memorial service his elder brother held:

Move, you too, grave mound — / my weeping voice is the autumn wind

Invited to a certain thatched hut

The autumn is cool — / let every hand peel them, melon and eggplant

Red, red — / and the sun shines on without a care, yet the autumn wind
