Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) Complete in one volume "The months and days are the travelers of a hundred generations, and the years that come and go are travelers too" — the travel record of Bashō, who left Edo at forty-six and walked Ōshū and Hokuriku for five months. In the summer grass he sees the dreams of warriors, in the rock he hears the voice of the cicadas soaking in, and under one roof he likens the sleeping women of pleasure to bush clover and the moon. Wherever the prose comes to rest, a haiku is set down. Beside the pilgrim records of Faxian, Xuanzang, and Hyecho, this is one more road in this library.

1Sora goes on ahead

Sora, being ill in the stomach, went on ahead to a place called Nagashima in the province of Ise.

On and on I go — / and if I fall and lie down, let it be a plain of bush clover — Sora

2From today I will rub out the writing

So he wrote and left it behind. The sorrow of the one who goes and the regret of the one who stays are like a pair of wild ducks parted and lost among the clouds. I too —

From today on / I will rub out the writing — the dew on my hat

3Zenshōji — one night apart is the same as a thousand ri

I lodged at a temple called Zenshōji outside the castle of Daishōji. It is still the land of Kaga. Sora too had stayed at this temple the night before —

All night long / do I hear the autumn wind in the hills behind?

4The sound of the sutras at dawn

So he left it. One night apart is the same as a thousand ri. I too lay in the priests' hall listening to the autumn wind, and as the sky of daybreak drew near and the voices reading the sutras grew clear, the bell and the board sounded and I went into the refectory.

5Sweeping the garden before setting out

Today I would go to the province of Echizen, and being in haste I went down below the hall. Young monks came after me with paper and inkstone as far as the foot of the stairs. Just then the willow in the garden was shedding its leaves, and so —

I will sweep the garden / and then set out — willow leaves falling at the temple
