Matching the Rhymes of a Poem Given Me by Yun Seyu, Director of Ceremonies; Made Where I Sat
The three birds are slow in carrying word, and the six dragons are busy driving the sun. The clear capital is far off in vain, and in this floating world I stray to no purpose. In the fields of Zheng (鄭) they still contend over a deer, and the neighbors of Yang Zhu (楊朱) wretchedly go looking for a sheep. How many seom is the care of a whole lifetime? In the thousand affairs there are a thousand lines of tears. On my desk there is the Treatise on the Kinship of the Three (參同契), but in my pouch there is no prescription against dying. Of myself I still say I am the short Master Yi, while people vie in laughing at me as the mad Zhang Xu (張旭). Grown thin, I fear to be reflected in the water-caltrop mirror; full of care, I am greedy for the scent of bamboo-leaf wine. The road home to the land of drunkenness is level, while the angered waves of the sea of office are gone mad. The sun and the moon are outside the holding of a cup, and the wind and the dust beside the stroking of a sword. The feelings of the world I have been through to the last of them, yet your purpose alone is hard to forget. In sleeping and eating we have been as body and shadow; in straits and in going through, one set of lungs, one gut. Five years we have shared, by night and by day, and together have had the heat and the cool of the four seasons. Your line came forth from Gwan Yun (關尹), and my kindred arose from Baegyang (伯陽). Our friendship of spirit is long since without a trace left of it, and only the craft of the tip of the brush has grown unusually long. You came for the first time with your sword still at your waist, and I had no leisure to beat the dust from my headcloth. Going out at the gate I saw you standing like jade; coming into the room I was glad of the orchid's fragrance. Spreading out our writings we vied in plying the brush; carried away by the mood we did not count the cups. You are Yuan Zifu (袁子服) calling out for the lu throw, and I Ruan Ji (阮籍) drinking wine while in mourning. The guests beside us must surely be laughing at one another, but what is within our hearts is truly hard to fathom. The pitch-pipes have run out this year's modes, and the ten thousand things bring on the goodly light of spring. Since the goodly season is about to draw near, the flowing of the years is only a sorrow. A man, while he lives, has nothing to do but enjoy it: let us meet together and be drunk a thousand times over.
