Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 2 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.
斷煙橫處響村舂。深巷無垣刺樹重。萬馬布山牛散野。望中渾是太平容。
Where the broken smoke slants across, the village pestle sounds;
the deep lane has no wall, and thorn trees stand doubled.
Ten thousand horses spread over the hills, the cattle scattered in the fields:
all that lies within my gaze is the look of great peace.
Interlinear notes 1
三首
Three poems.
曉寒霜重織聲催。日暮煙昏樵唱廻。野老那知重九日。偶逢黃菊泛濃醅。
In the dawn cold the frost lies thick and the weaving sound urges on;
the sun sets, the smoke darkens, and the woodcutters' song comes home.
How should an old man of the fields know it is the Double Ninth?
Meeting yellow chrysanthemums by chance, he floats them on thick wine.
山梨葉赤野桑黃。一路風廻間稻香。汲井聲中人響屐。柴門不鎖月鋪霜。
The mountain pear's leaves are red, the wild mulberry yellow.
Along the road the wind turns, and between the gusts comes the scent of rice.
Amid the sound of drawing water from the well, clogs go clacking by;
the brushwood gate is not barred, and the moon has spread a frost.
