Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 3 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

The Hermit of White Clouds has already grown frail ashamed to chase after the frivolous lads of Chang'an In vain I copy Yang Xiong (揚雄) and draft a Great Mystery (太玄) of my own but no one loads up wine and cares to follow me So by chance I came calling at the master's house and as I rapped at the gate my black kerchief hung askew The host laughed once, and a spring warmth arose enough to open flowers even in the harsh tenth month of winter We tip out ample fine wine like the River Si (泗水) and wet our nails to stir the ants floating in the cup The glow is bright, the sunlight just now melting red the rain has cleared, the mountain hue about to drip green We clasp hands and speak our hearts, sprinkling tears on our robes Why should a man's one lifetime be such hard toil? I write rhapsodies, and regret having no Keeper of the Hounds (狗監) you have gained office, and regret being still in the Horse Bureau (馬曹) Both of us are wanderers adrift in the human world so having met, how could we not float the great cup? The wine ripens, I look round all four quarters and my heart takes wing and heaven and earth and the six directions are narrow for it Suddenly he calls a maidservant to spread out southern paper (蠻牋) and asks me to let the mad rapture of poetry loose at its ease Only when the fierce indignation filling my breast is spat out do I stop and so I leave him this one mad song
