Yi, Collator of Texts, Having Answered Me, I Answer Him Again in the Same Rhymes
Lonely, I have opened three narrow paths, and have managed to set up a single hall. All my life I have thought even dish-washing sweet, and I laugh at the lesser recluse who climbed the wall. My ugly maidservant looks like a barbarian, and my foolish manservant has the country in his speech. In goodness I am not the man who dwelt at Zhengpu (鄭圃), but in thought I am as fine as the man who whistled on Mount Sumen (蘇門山). On the little stone step the wind strikes the bamboo, and on the sweet furrow the dew wets the sweet flag. I see rising and falling in the grasses, and commit my body and the world to hillock and hedge. The northern tower stretches slanting toward the road, and the southern hills run on and split the earth. The blossoms of the udo (牛桃) have just now burst open, and the oat leaves are rank for the first time. People laugh much at my living as I please, and since the transmitting has ceased not even the spirits exalt me. The house of Wang had nothing but its walls for nothing, and the wife of Fan was long without breeches. It is as if I had presumed to lean upon a tree of jade, and I swear to hold fast together like the green pine. I quickly turn about my cap of sparrow pattern, and we are drunk together from a jar that works up like maggots. In the darkening scene the misted flowers are a confusion, and in the spring sky the drizzling mist is dim. Stealing a moment, I doze on a little stool, and when the mood takes me I walk round the sweet garden. I hear the birds singing in the willow of the lane, and watch the kun bird dancing on the sand of the yard. I am the stubborn Xi Shuye (嵇叔夜) before the bellows, and the old Chen Xuan (陳暄) who loved his wine. Still I think of the hand that wielded the axe, and there is left to me only the bitterness of weeping with a jade in my arms. For your sake I am sweeping the ground even now, so do not shrink from coming, as though it were a trouble.
