Various Pieces Written on the North Mountain
Once the Way is attained there is nothing more to do, and sutra (經) and vinaya (律) are no more than footprints and fish traps. I do not perform the karma rite (羯磨), so let the mountain monk simply sleep in peace.
Interlinear notes 1
九首
Nine poems.
The monk of the rocks does not come out at random, and the birds of the stream fly idly of themselves. The mist among the pines at the day's end drizzles down as if it would wet my clothes.
I wake from my dream and the mountain moon is setting; I chant a long while and the clouds of the fields go home. Pine and stone — this morning is right; wind and dust — yesterday was wrong.
With my headcloth pushed back I lean on a green pine, and shaking out my geomungo I sweep the white stones. The falling cascade cuts the green waist of the hill, and the cold peak splits the dizzying blue.
I am one who has forgotten the schemes of the world and sees the ten thousand things as of one kind. The mountain birds do not understand this at all, and seeing me they start up of a sudden in fright.
I set no store by the poem of the white colt, and lodge my mind in the rhapsody of the black butterfly. Having read one chapter of the Nanhuajing (南華經), I find the sun in the mountains at midday.
The mountain flowers have opened in the secluded valley, as if to announce the spring within the hills. When do they ever care for blooming and falling? For the most part they are people sunk in meditation.
The traveler's stool is quiet and I am dull with idleness, while the man in seclusion is deep in sleep. I did not hear the voice that called Seungnyeok (勝力), yet at one stroke of the bell he starts up in surprise.
The man of the mountains does not go out of the mountains, and the old path is buried in aged moss. What I fear, perhaps, is that someone in the red dust will make light of the moon on my green vines.
