Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 7 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.
落日三盃醉。淸風一枕眠。竹虛同客性。松老等僧年。野水搖蒼石。村畦繞翠巓。晚來山更好。詩思湧如泉。
At the setting sun I drink three cups and am drunk;
in the clear wind I sleep upon a single pillow.
The bamboo is hollow, like a traveller's nature;
the pine is old, a match for the monk's years.
Water in the fields shakes the blue stones,
and the village furrows ring the green peaks.
As evening comes the hills are better still,
and thoughts of poems well up like a spring.
Interlinear notes 1
二首
Two poems.
碧湖晴瀲灎。芳草遠芊綿。問路三千里。知名四十年。愛凉憑水檻。眺遠上雲巓。老衲渾多事。評茶復品泉。
The blue lake clears and ripples over,
and the flowering grass stretches far and dim.
I ask the road: three thousand li;
I have known the name for forty years.
Loving the cool I lean on the railing by the water;
to gaze afar I climb the cloudy peak.
The old monk is altogether full of business:
he appraises the tea, and then sorts the spring water.
