Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 12 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

Eyes like lightning under a rock shine even at ordinary times and are never confused, and the books he has read come barely to three thousand volumes. He shuts his gate and alone lets down the curtain of Dong Sheng (董生), and though there were mallows in the garden he never once turned to look. Of late, drowned on dry land, he is worn out by the ants, and with every sorrow and pain he is always as if drunk. Whenever he sees a red skirt his eyes open wide at once, and calling a thousand times, ten thousand times, he sees every kind of beauty. Yesterday the one who offered the flowers was like jade, and I feigned anger and shook out both my sleeves. Why be angry that there were leaves and no flower? The crape myrtle grieves the idle green that makes only shade. Even in a stringless geomungo one may lodge one's pleasure, and one must trust the breadth of heart and the antique air of Tao Qian. Since I have already lost the smooth cap for pinning a flower, how should the water splash up and soil my silk robe? This year the spring has gone and the flowers have withered, but when next spring comes round the flowers will laugh again. I ask you: will you come again and break me off a branch? And though there be no flower again, why must I blame you? I only lean upon the teasing to unknit my brows; it is not that I must cling to that girl. Had there been no piece written haltingly that day, how should I have seen the Master's splendid poem? There is wine in my house, but it is thin and weak besides. Still I mean to welcome you and open a modest gathering. Though there be none to sing low and help our pleasure along, we shall recite once and sing once and so, for what it is worth, repay each other. Have you not seen, deep within the palace where orioles sing and swallows dance, a beauty stretching herself and just risen from sleep? I beg you, go and carry on the 「Song of the Lovely Women (麗人行)」; there is no need to paint the pearls and the kingfisher-green in color.
