Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 12 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

前三篇。皆言花柳之事。頗近浮靡。今於此篇。悉皆削去。亦變風反正之義也。

The three pieces before this all spoke of flowers and willows, and came rather near to being giddy and extravagant. In this piece I have taken all of that away, which is likewise the intent of turning an altered air (風) back to what is right.

幷序

A preface is included.

A man of skill works his conjuring and bewilders people, sticking things on with paint and taking them off again in a moment. The Maker's begetting of men is likewise only a jest, and bowing and looking up, going and coming, we open our eyes wide for nothing. Looking up even at the Three Sovereigns, they are like lice and ants; how much more should the mason wasp debate being sober or drunk? I would sooner drift and cling at the ford along with the world than count it sweet to follow others for duty's sake and flatter at the stove. A single blowfly all at once sets a spot upon the jade, and the heart's fire blazes up and is hard to put out. At the small window the sound of rain is cold the whole day, and on the secluded path there is no one, and the mosses are green in clusters. Ziang's (子昂) making of poems was all a lodging of what he felt, and Shiheng's (士衡) lodging himself in things often took the ancients for a model. O bright moon of Zhongshan (鍾山), I shall go back. O spirit of the mountain, do not grudge the fouling of the green pool. I have already seen clear through the overturnings of men, and my mouth is of itself silent, and my heart of itself laughs. The student of books is stiff and fierce, and Heaven hates him; the words of his poems are lonely and lofty, and the vulgar blame him. Facing you is like embracing the brows of Zizhi (紫芝), and you too call me the little child of the Yang family. You spit out a breath ten thousand fathoms long, like a rainbow, and give me three strands of poems like ice and snow. Do not say that, being salt and pickled greens, the feeling and the savor are thin. The sap of heaven ought to be ladled with the Dipper's handle. Then I shall draft a new piece and sing the great peace, and repay it with the long life (壽) of a Son of Heaven at peace. If the leftover wave should reach even to where I lie coiled in the mud, I would breathe the wind and thunder in and out and rise once into the air. Following each other, bearing our brushes, we shall carry on that splendid outing, and together admire the green of the willows at the Weiyang Palace.
