Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 14 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

1First Poem

That year, hand in hand, we climbed to Yingzhou (瀛洲), and washed together in the small ripples of the Phoenix Pool (鳳沼). Your old title has not yet been changed, so do not sigh that today we cannot roam together.

Interlinear notes 3

二首

Two poems.

By the old usage one could not go out to a provincial post holding a title of the Secretariat (省). The Duke alone took up his post as Secretary of the Imperial Diary

There were such words in the poem he sent. That is why this was said.

2Second Poem

I have heard that the Western Capital (西都) is better than ten isles, and that within it the flowers and willows are the most elegant of all. To climb a tower and whistle long is the business of your house, so once you sit and drive off the barbarians' siege, you may roam your fill.

Interlinear notes 1

In the poem he sent he spoke in detail of the hardship of holding off the barbarians, and said there was not one day on which he could unknit his face.
