Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 15 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

Even cutting through the rough thickets, it is hard to open a way, and on the stony path there is little that is level and clear. I got down from the horse and walked, and took a fall, and my three-foot staff was broken. The hidden flying squirrel is not used to men and stands as if its arms were folded, with a blank look on it. Starving tiger, do not roar at me — I lean upon loyalty and good faith (忠信). At the top of the trees we came upon a temple, its buildings framed and leaning against a rocky peak. Who was it that gave it its name? They took Bright Moon (明月) for their signboard. It is that they would clear the heart by the moon, not that there is any looking at the moon from here. The abbot's room is higher than the tower and presses far down on the breadth of the blue sea. From of old I had heard that the sky is hard to climb, and suddenly I am above the sky already. The color of the water, the farther off, the whiter, all of one shape, like white silk spread out, like frost. Shadowed clouds and clearing sunset glow in an instant take ten million shapes. A great ship sets a dot in the middle of the waves, small as a light gull rocking there. I say to the fisherman in his boat: mind yourself and pull your oar well. That figure of yours, roaming at leisure, I shall put into the compass of my poem. Ah, I have been drunk on documents and have long betrayed all clear enjoyment. In going on two years since I came to this district I have not yet come seeking at leisure like this. This morning I drove my cart out here, and it answers greatly to the thought I have long had in mind. I beg you, let us stay a while longer — this is something Heaven has sent us.
