Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 16 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

1First Poem

右史官淸帶禮曹。足償江郡二年勞。禁池瀲灎猶依舊。老鳳重來浴羽毛。

The office of Right Historian (右史) is a clear one, and it carries the Rites Board besides — ample repayment for two years of toil in a riverside district. The palace pool brims and brims, the same as it was before, and the old phoenix has come back again to wash its feathers.

2Second Poem

桂陽謫去方瀕死。藥省重廻似更生。員案前陳官醞釅。猶勝百里強專城。

Banished to Gyeyang, I came near to death, and returning again to the Medicine Secretariat (藥省) I feel brought back to life. The government wine set out before the official's desk is strong, and that is better than ruling a hundred-li district all to myself by force.
