Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 16 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

盤桓雖滯亞卿聯。宴席同陪王座前。法從參登無幾輩。微官忝赴愧諸賢。袖中仙橘天香洩。頭上宣花國色妍。御手斟杯還賜語。感深雙淚瀉如泉。

Hesitating, I am held back in the rank of the Agyeong (亞卿), yet at the banquet I attend together before the king's seat. Those who have risen to the rank that attends the king are but a few, and going forward presumptuously in a low office, I am ashamed before the many worthies. The immortals' tangerine in my sleeve lets out a heavenly fragrance, and the bestowed flower on my head is lovely with the color of the realm. The king pours the cup with his own hand and grants me words besides, and my feeling runs so deep that two streams of tears pour out like a spring.
