On the muin day, the twenty-ninth of the seventh month of the jeongyu year, Worthy Consort Gyeongmok of the Kim house fell ill and passed away at a private house in Sadang-ri (社堂里). Her coffin was soon moved to the family home south of the capital, and on the eulyu day, the seventh of the tenth month, she was buried at Gareung (嘉陵), as the rites require.
The omen of the tortoise-shell falls in season, and the bier makes ready to take the road. You leave your golden house and go forth on the pine-lined way to the tomb. The rites are matched to the ceremony for a queen, and there is light upon the roads of the state. When I think of the Eastern Palace beating his breast in grief, the pain of my own heart grows the greater. With what shall I praise you? With this writing alone. The writing is this.
Heaven sent down a golden chest, and the source of blessing was first opened. That vein was carried on clear and unbroken, and you were its descendant. And your mother's house, what house was that? A house that generation after generation shared with the state an oath that would not change. Where goodness heaped up gathers, a fragrant name does not cease. Fair and fair, O lovely one, you were gentle and yielding and kind. Excellent as an orchid, and beautiful as jade. You became the partner of the Eastern Palace, as though a divine promise had been fulfilled. We thought you would rightly carry on the house and long enjoy its generations. How is it that you did not enjoy that fortune, but suddenly departed for good? At fourteen you were married, and at sixteen you were gone. How long was the space between? In the space of a single instant you had grief and glory both complete. And for the state you bore, in full measure, a child to carry on the line. Who was it that pushed her away, that it came so suddenly to this?
Ah, if one weighs her goodness and her virtue, men and Heaven are of one mind in it; what command had Heaven, then, that it pressed her so urgently? Ah, how sad.
The going steps do not halt, and the mound of the tomb draws slowly nearer. I hear the dirge-song rise in unison, and watch to see where the swaying funeral banner points. The wind is desolate and keeps time with the sound of sorrow; the smoke is wretched and adds to the grief. Ah, what is there to say? From this time on, all is far away.
My own pain is such as this; what then must be the heart of the royal heir? Ah, how sad.
