Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 39 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

The rarely met World-Honored One spread wide the sea-like store of scripture of the Three Vehicles (三乘), and the highest divine spell is alone called the thousand-petaled lotus. If in truth one upholds and voices it earnestly, protection is straightway added.

I consider that, succeeding to my ancestors' line, I plan to keep the foundation of the state. That the people may rest their shoulders depends in part upon the government of the court; but for the power the Buddha adds upon the crown of the head, there is nothing like upholding this gate of the Law.

Reverently following the old ordinance, I spread out the rite for the burning of incense. Looking up toward your compassionate discernment, I chant these hidden words.

Look upon this sincere observance and straightway add your wondrous help. Let me receive abundant blessing and lengthen luxuriantly the span of long life; and let the myriad people be brought to plenty, that I may long caress the work of great peace.
