When the shapes of calamity pass by and give notice to men, each comes according to its own kind; and since Heaven aids sincerity and helps what is below, it is fitting to pray with what is true.
That is to say, with a worthless substance and virtue truly thin, I long ago succeeded to the great line, and by this have been able to come to the fairness of this present day. Keeping to a design that will go far, I dare not forsake the command of the Lord on High. Yet there are faults in my speech and in my bearing, and besides these many failings in government and punishment, so that the hearts of the people are not trusting and portents in the heavens appear one after another.
Ah, the going of Jupiter (歲星) has been slow, so that Mars has come to overtake and encroach upon it; still more, the envoy of heaven has flown and streamed down and set its trace upon the station of Munchang (文昌); and the thunder, too, grew angry and sounded in the ninth month. Repentance and shame lie in the slightest hint of a thing, and so it is fitting to ache with deep care; therefore my thoughts come round to diligence, and I wait to lean upon the help that men do not see.
Reverently I go to the house of the immortals and think to behold the divine light. I summon the masters who hold the white documents to chant the secret books, and furnishing the lawful offering rite of the black altar, I offer up this poor ceremony.
Prostrate, I pray that my earnest inmost heart may quietly pass through to you and good omens gather again and again. Let the seven stars accord with the trueness of the armillary sphere, neither going awry nor falling into error; and let there be no holding and beating of drums in the four quarters, so that we prosper little by little and little by little grow full.
