Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 40 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

How holy it is: the Buddha's teaching is like a sea of one flavor, where from the first all difference of sour and sweet, same and other, is cut off. It is only because human natures have three sorts of capacity that the distinctions of great and small, partial and perfect, were set up; truly, if one stills the mind and unties it clearly, then all gather at the utmost and run abreast.

I consider that, unworthy as I am, I have come to preside over the multitude of the people. Careful and fearful until evening, I have harbored no thought of ease and pleasure; and since calamity arises from a germ, I have always been on guard against the spreading of its first signs.

Yet because the main threads of government are much wanting, it has often come about that the patterns of heaven show something uncanny. Venus has suddenly trespassed upon Taemi (大微), and Jupiter has again encroached upon Hyeonghok (熒惑星). At this I tremble deeply and burn, and long the more earnestly to loosen the trouble and turn it away.

Since I must cast myself upon the subtle gate and look up to receive compassionate help, I follow the old statutes and open wide an assembly of practice. A hundred men's hands unroll the writings strung on thread, spreading the net of the Law on high; by one stroke of the mallet the meaning of the held-up flower is sifted, making the source of the patriarchs overflow the more. Scarcely was the mountain of merit heaped up when the moon of awakening came through.

Prostrate, I pray that the germ of calamity have not even a sign and the gathering of blessing deepen the more; that weapons be put away, so that within and without the alarms of wind and dust are cut off; and that the court be harmonious, so that generals and ministers blend like water and milk.
