Petition, as above, for the setting up of a vow and the holding of a dharma assembly of the host of spirits for seven days
The Buddha's responding is like the bright moon in the sky, whose shining passes through the worlds; the majesty of the spirits, like a great mountain pressing down upon an egg, breaks the demon armies and lays them prostrate.
The people of that Khitan (契丹) are from the first the seed of the Hyeomyun (玁狁). Betraying and leaving their own country, they were like roe deer that had lost their burrow; and then they invaded our country and became tigers that grind their teeth — what is to be done? That men have trespassed on a neighbor's land to work off an old grudge has happened from of old; but of roaming openly through another's borders without cause I have not heard. Now they tear down districts and make them waste, now they burn monasteries and make them ashes. For the sins they have done they ought quickly to receive a manifest punishment; how is it that the punishment is so late, and they still do not mend their filthy ways? The world below and the world here are angry together, and within and without we grieve together.
I, So-and-so, with commonplace talent, have charge over both the civil and the military offices. I have not been able to borrow chopsticks before the king and set forth a strategy to help him, nor to ask for a cord below the palace and bring their chieftain back in bonds. Not only does sweat stand on my brow in shame; I also beat my breast and sigh.
I would cast myself upon the Buddha's shade and look up to beg numinous help. In a private house I have laid out a seat of almsgiving and gathered the eminent of the Sangha. My sincere diligence is at its height, and my repentance is truly much.
Prostrate, I pray that, lending the majesty of the eight classes of guardian spirits, you aid the spirit of the three armies: let the rank host of barbarian foes all die like □ the venom of a wasp, and let those of our own people who have been tainted and have attached themselves to them change their owl's cry and submit.
