Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 41 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

The ten hidden and mysterious meanings are like the sun that shines first upon the high mountains, and the merit of incense in the four offerings is like sweetness flowing from the sugarcane. I consider that the root of peace for the altars of the state and for the people lies in the compassion by which Buddha, Law and Sangha keep and gather us in. Still more, the numinous book of these three sages is truly the perfect teaching of the One Vehicle. It does not weary of being unfolded and sounded forth, and its moistening is without bound.

Therefore within the palace the wheel of the vow is first set turning, and men are sent to the monastery, where the seat of awakening is now spread. That the several donors provide the feast is in every case an upholding of blessing for the sake of the state.

A disciple such as I has long held, beyond his station, the seat of chief minister of the state, and has received much of his king's grace. What is lacking is not goods: raise it in the heart, and it is at once provided. Who, holding this seat, would know a thing to be right and yet not do it? And so I give out my household's goods and furnish with strict care every offering to the Buddha. The deep inner meaning of the text is unfolded, and we come to the place where principle and phenomena melt into one another. I pray that the excellent karmic bond thus bound may at once get through to that bright discernment.

Prostrate, I pray that the sovereign of the state enjoy the happiness of great peace and the mother of the state receive the blessing of not growing old; that the courses of the stars follow their constancy, so that no reproof of the blue heaven appears; and that rich grace come with the season and swiftly moisten the parched red earth.
