Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 41 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

The words of one voice from the broad and long tongue all issue from the setting forth of truth, and the gate of the ten thousand practices at the summit of light is called the teaching that alone exhausts the meaning. If the heart truly reveres, how should blessings have any end?

Prostrate I consider: So-and-so wrongly holds the place of a chief minister, and truly falls short of contributing even a thread's worth. I rely only upon the Buddha's power as I plan to build up the foundation of the state. To pay reverence to monks who cultivate in sincerity is the same as drawing near to behold the Buddha's face in person. When they wander the four quarters to study, their roaming traces are left to you and to a single staff; when they pass the three months of winter, there is no harm in their resting the body in a single room. Therefore I have lodged the great masters of the mountain gates in a clean house in the capital.

Happily the fitting ones have all gathered — and what Dharma is worth proclaiming here? Only this wondrous lotus, which truly came forth from the mound of purple gold. Let the subtle words be but unfolded, and original awakening grows bright of itself. We would receive the Tathāgata's outstretched arm and his touch, and then the terror of one who thought he had lost his own head will at once be gone. The fragments of karmic conditions have only just come together, yet the response of awakening is not far off.

Prostrate, I pray that calamity dissolve at a stroke and auspicious signs come again and again; that His Majesty's years grow longer still, outlasting heaven itself; and that the lives of the people be at peace in their places and free of care.
