Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 41 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

The patriarchs, in handing down and attesting the seal of the mind, did not shrink from opening the seal of the mouth along with it, and living beings, in training and tempering the root of their nature, must first receive it by the ear. I venture to set forth my crimson sincerity and await the hearing of your jade-like voice.

Respectfully I consider that his reverence So-and-so crosses the heavens on splendid wings and breaks through the net with his long scales. A great bow is seldom used, and though you have for a while put away the notch of the string, your seasoned skill remains, and when you meet a target you shoot at once.

How much more so when the footing of the state is just now in difficulty — this is the very time when the Dharma King saves with an aching heart.

Prostrate, I pray that you will mount the high seat and open a little of your secret store; that beneath the sword before the gate you cut off the calamity that has not yet shown even a sign; and that from the flute without holes you blow forth the tune of great peace.
