Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Latter Collection, Book 4 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.
Those who came out from my gate are all renowned men,
harmonious without a lute being played, joined without lacquer being laid.
Do not say it is the work of three or four years;
truly it comes of a karmic tie of a thousand hundred kalpas.
I bring the scholars like jade bamboo shoots (玉笋) who fill the steps
and show them off to the gold-seal-wearing guests who fill the seats.
The jade flute is blown slowly, and feeling grows the more genial;
the sunset-colored cups are drained, and faces turn back to spring.
We know only that the chancellor goes braving the dusk;
how should the night watch (金吾) be out on patrol forbidding night travel?
Though we play merrily today, tomorrow we shall scatter,
and the old traces of former days are new at this hour.
With one cup the red-girdled old man topples over —
a white-haired official who has soared for twenty-four years.
A gathering like this is truly rare in a lifetime,
so as we part, do not decline because the cups come often.
