Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Latter Collection, Book 5 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.
My offering was not only for the sake of the five phases,
but to announce to you, sir, many kinds of good omen.
Seeing a thousand springs, it reckons the long years of the cedrela;
the sixty cycles are spread out at length, bright to your mirror-like eyes.
Only one who has laid down office, such as I, receives an almanac;
so you too, seated here, should summon the sprouts that are to rise.
Though ministers filling the court vie in presenting their gifts,
please weigh the feeling with which this worthless man sends his along.
Interlinear notes 2
唯宰相致仕得曆。故云。
Only a minister who has retired from office receives the almanac. Hence he says this.
公致仕後拜三品。則亦望拜相云。
After retiring from office the Lord received the third rank, so this says that he hopes to rise to minister as well.
