Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Latter Collection, Book 8 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

Of late we have missed each other like two stars, one rising as the other sets, so with whom shall I meet the sights of the new season? Next year let us be long drunk together, and make up for the four seasons spent in vain this year.

Interlinear notes 2

三首

There are three poems.

I was ill and could not meet him.

Below it sets out the spirit generals (神將), above it sets out the stars, and cold and heat come round and round, new with every year. You must surely reckon beforehand what waxes and wanes, what comes and goes; why then say that only on seeing the almanac do you know the round of the year?

Interlinear notes 1

The poem he sent said, "Only on seeing the almanac do I know that the four seasons come round."

Why divine the fate one is born with from years and days? Next year you will enter the Secretariat (中書省) and ride the new wave. You will surely attend the sun and walk the Yellow Path (黃道), serving and following the royal carriage.

Interlinear notes 1

The first line of the poem he sent took an ox shaking its horns for the year of his birth, and the line below said, "How might I attend beside the vermilion carriage and walk close along the Yellow Path?"
