Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Latter Collection, Book 10 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

風曉床琴咽。陰天柱礎津。讀殘書在手。睡氣着來頻。

In the dawn wind the zither on the couch sobs, and under a clouded sky the foundation stones are damp. A book half read is still in my hand, and drowsiness presses in again and again.

三首

Three poems.

靜戶風開幔。明窓日弄塵。屋烏啼孝子。簷燕舞佳人。

At the quiet gate the wind draws back the curtain, and at the bright window the sunlight toys with the dust. The crow on the roof cries as a filial son, and the swallow at the eaves dances like a lovely woman.

有意尋園去。無端入閣來。脚危心莫制。難遣上層臺。

I had a mind to go visit the garden, yet for no reason I came into the loft instead. My legs tremble so that not even my will can govern them, and it is hard to send these legs up to a high terrace.
