Jingang Jing (The Diamond Sutra) Complete in one volume "All marks that exist are empty and false" — a sutra that teaches one to give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere. It follows, just as they stand, the thirty-two sections into which Prince Zhaoming divided it. It is told that Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, heard one line of this sutra and set his heart on awakening.

1Give Without Dwelling Anywhere

"Furthermore, Subhuti! In all dharmas a bodhisattva should practice giving without dwelling anywhere. That is, giving without dwelling in form, and giving without dwelling in sound, scent, taste, touch, or dharmas. Subhuti! A bodhisattva should give in this way, not dwelling in marks. Why is this? Because when a bodhisattva gives without dwelling in marks, that merit cannot be measured."

Interlinear notes 1

The wondrous practice has from the first no dwelling and no attachment.

2Can the Space to the East Be Measured?

"Subhuti! What do you think? Can the space to the east be measured?"

3It Cannot Be

"No, World-Honored One!"

4And the Space in Every Direction?

"Subhuti! Can the space to the south, the west, the north, in the four corners, above and below, be measured?"

5It Cannot Be

"No, World-Honored One!"

6So It Is with Merit

"Subhuti! The merit of a bodhisattva who gives without dwelling in marks is like this too: it cannot be measured. Subhuti! A bodhisattva should dwell only as he has been taught."
