Section 5 — Seeing the real as it is如理實見分第五
Jingang Jing (The Diamond Sutra) Complete in one volume "All marks that exist are empty and false" — a sutra that teaches one to give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere. It follows, just as they stand, the thirty-two sections into which Prince Zhaoming divided it. It is told that Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, heard one line of this sutra and set his heart on awakening.
1Can the Tathagata Be Seen by Bodily Marks?
「須菩提。於意云何?可以身相見如來不?」
"Subhuti! What do you think? Can the Tathagata be seen by his bodily marks?"
Interlinear notes 1
自如之理,乃見真實
Only by the principle of things as they are does one see the real.
2Because They Are Not Bodily Marks
「不也,世尊,不可以身相得見如來。何以故?如來所說身相,即非身相。」
"No, World-Honored One. The Tathagata cannot be seen by his bodily marks. Why is this? Because the bodily marks the Tathagata speaks of are not bodily marks."
3All Marks Are False
佛告須菩提:「凡所有相,皆是虛妄。若見諸相非相,即見如來。」
The Buddha said to Subhuti, "All marks that exist are empty and false. If you see that all marks are not marks, then you see the Tathagata."
