Section 13 — Taking it up as the Dharma teaches
1What Shall This Sutra Be Called?
Then Subhuti said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! What should this sutra be called, and how should we take it up and keep it?"
Interlinear notes 1
Take up and keep it just as this Dharma teaches.
2Vajra Prajna-paramita
The Buddha said to Subhuti, "This sutra is called Vajra Prajna-paramita (金剛般若波羅蜜), and by that name you should take it up and keep it. Why is this? Subhuti! Because the prajna-paramita the Buddha speaks of is not prajna-paramita; that is only its name. Subhuti! What do you think? Is there a Dharma the Tathagata has spoken?"
3The Tathagata Has Spoken Nothing
Subhuti said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! The Tathagata has spoken nothing."
4Are the Motes of Dust Many?
"Subhuti! What do you think? Are the motes of dust in the great thousandfold world-system many?"
5Very Many
Subhuti said, "Very many, World-Honored One!"
6Dust and World Are Only Names
"Subhuti! All those motes of dust the Tathagata says are not motes of dust; that is only their name. And the world the Tathagata speaks of is not a world; that is only its name. Subhuti! What do you think? Can the Tathagata be seen by the thirty-two marks
7He Cannot Be Seen by the Thirty-Two Marks
"No, World-Honored One! The Tathagata cannot be seen by the thirty-two marks. Why is this? Because the thirty-two marks the Tathagata speaks of are not marks; that is only their name."
8Greater Than Giving Body and Life
"Subhuti! Suppose a good man or a good woman gave away bodies and lives as many as the grains of sand in the Ganges. And suppose someone else took up and kept even a four-line verse from this sutra and spoke it for others. That merit would be far greater!"
