Jingang Jing (The Diamond Sutra) Complete in one volume "All marks that exist are empty and false" — a sutra that teaches one to give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere. It follows, just as they stand, the thirty-two sections into which Prince Zhaoming divided it. It is told that Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, heard one line of this sutra and set his heart on awakening.

1Can the Tathagata Be Seen by the Thirty-Two Marks?

"Subhuti! What do you think? Can the Tathagata be seen by the thirty-two marks?"

Interlinear notes 1

The pure Dharma body does not belong to shape or mark.

2He Can Be Seen

Subhuti said, "So it is, so it is! The Tathagata is seen by the thirty-two marks."

3Then a Wheel-Turning Sage King Would Be the Tathagata

The Buddha said, "Subhuti! If the Tathagata is seen by the thirty-two marks, then a wheel-turning sage king would be the Tathagata."

4He Should Not Be Seen So

Subhuti said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! As I understand the meaning of what the Buddha says, the Tathagata should not be seen by the thirty-two marks."

5He Spoke a Verse

Then the World-Honored One spoke a verse:

6If Anyone Seeks to See Me in Form

"If anyone seeks to see me in form, or seeks me in sound, that person walks a false path and cannot see the Tathagata."
