A memorial of congratulation on the gracious edict
1Amnesty after the eclipse of the moon, and the order to gather the bones
Your servant So-and-so speaks. Your servant received a report from the court liaison office. The Bureau of Astronomy reported that on the night of the sixteenth day of the sixth month the moon was eclipsed. On the twenty-third day of the sixth month your servant received the gracious edict, which said: the prisoners now held within the Sanchuan circuit are to be entrusted to the senior officers of each place, who within five days shall review their cases and decide them; and the bones lying exposed on the four sides of the capital district are to be entrusted to the garrisons, which shall strictly follow the earlier and later imperial orders and send men to gather them up and bury them. When the moon hid its light, a special amnesty let your grace flow. Your teaching is full in weeping for the guilty, and your sense of right rests on covering their bones. It raises a glad shout in the forts of Shu and washes away the baleful vapors over the Qinchuan plain. Your servant So-and-so truly claps his hands and truly leaps for joy, bowing his head to the ground, bowing his head to the ground. Your servant humbly considers this. The sun follows its course and shines down, and does not lose its place. The moon waxes and wanes with the season, and so keeps its constancy. How much more at this time, when the mingjia leaves first wither and the cassia wheel wanes of itself. Weapons melt away in the land below, and this is no stone qilin fighting in secret at Dongling. A reproach appears in the heaven above, and the jade hare waned for a while at the western waters. Since it is like the fault of a gentleman, it has grieved the heart of the sage. Your servant humbly considers that Your Majesty, the Sagely, Divine, Keen and Wise, Benevolent, Discerning, Bright and Filial Emperor, has brightly unfolded your sage design and kept the whole realm at peace. Your benevolence reaches far, and your virtue overcomes what is baleful. Meeting the season for spreading right, you have raised up the law that takes account of disaster. Your kindness grieves at deaths in prison, so that shut-in convicts are spared from lingering in wind and frost. Your sense of right pierces to the hidden souls, so that those who died along the road are all wet with rain and dew. This can make the Fu River shine with the color of a thousand years and the Ba mountains cry out the sound of ten thousand years. Your way continues the way of ruling with the robes let down, and your law is no hindrance to leaving the reins loose. Your servant waits for the imperial progress to return, and looks up to congratulate you on the feng and shan rites. Your servant is bound to the guarding of his frontier command and cannot offer his congratulations at your traveling palace. He cannot bear the utmost of clapping and leaping and trembling. He respectfully presents this memorial of congratulation for Your Majesty's hearing. Your servant So-and-so is truly glad and truly joyful, bowing his head to the ground, bowing his head to the ground. Respectfully spoken.
