Gyewon Pilgyeongjip (A Plowing of the Brush in the Cassia Garden) Book 4 — Memorials to the Throne A collection Choe Chiwon made by choosing out of the writings of his four years in the headquarters of Gao Pian, military commissioner of Huainan under the Tang, binding them into twenty volumes and presenting them to King Heongang of Silla in 886. It holds 366 pieces — memorials and reports sent up to the emperor, the proclamation denouncing Huang Chao, letters to the several military commissioners, orders and dispatches issued to those under him, Daoist and Buddhist texts for services, funeral offerings, records written for the outer wall of Chengdu and for a painting of Annam, and the reports and poems he sent up to Gao Pian. Here is the first report, which begins "I am a man of Silla," and the proclamation against Huang Chao with its line, "Not only do all the men of the world think to kill you openly; the ghosts under the earth have already discussed cutting you down in secret." The last volume holds the poems he made on the voyage home to the country he had left at twelve. It is the oldest collection by a Korean that survives, and when Hong Seokju and Seo Yugu printed it with movable type in 1834 they called it "the root and the beginning of the writing of our Eastern Country." Their two prefaces are translated with it.

2What manner of man Song Xuan is

The officer above carries on the good fortune of a chancellor's house and has made his name in the garden of letters. Withdrawn, he lived content in the poverty of Dongguo; going forward, he cared for his parents and chanted the song of Nangai. Since he joined the tent of the army he has shown good counsel throughout, and while he helped in the government the stars and the frosts changed many times, yet his purity and diligence did not alter in wind or rain. He has long helped in a heavy charge, and so your servant dares to hope for a special honor for him. Your servant respectfully asks that his office be advanced and his robe and insignia changed, and that he serve in his post as before.

4The one who repaid his mother and the one who followed his father

The officer above took his teaching from a master of the Confucian school and has the arts of an official besides his talent. He tied on his seal cord in the royal domain and early showed his diligent labor, and he trailed his skirts as a guest in the tent and had many a well turned plan. Your servant hopes for a pure rank in the censorate for him, so that he may help in the heavy authority of the monopoly office. Your servant respectfully asks that his office be advanced and that he serve in his post as before. □ The statement above is as it stands. Your servant bows low and considers that the way a servant and a son establishes himself is by filial duty and by loyalty, and by being as careful at the end as at the beginning. If a man fulfills the wish of bringing honor to his parents, he will surely be diligent in the sincerity with which he serves his lord. To choose one's neighbors and settle where to live, to cut the weaving from the loom and urge a child to study, and to keep a face of loving care with nothing lacking until he stands on his own, and so repay the love of a kind mother, is in Song Xuan. And to teach a child the way of right, to withdraw and learn the rites, and to have a rule in all he does with his strength until he takes office, and so follow the teaching of a stern father, is in Yanxiu. And so your servant has long leaned upon their counsel and thinks well besides of their conduct, for their deeds may urge on the customs of the people, and his own will is keen to recommend worthy men. Your servant bows low and considers that His Majesty the Emperor lets kindness flow through the realm and governs the world by filial duty. Turn the sage encouragement especially upon them and allow them the honor of being received as guests, so that they may cultivate themselves and follow what they know, and give all their care to honoring their parents and working at the root. Your servant troubles the imperial screen and cannot bear his fear. He respectfully records this and makes it heard, and bows low to await the rescript.
