1Go on to the emperor's traveling court and do not turn back
忽奉公狀。備睹忠誠。慰愜欽依。但增衷抱。員外芳含鷄樹。秀稟鼇山。來登天上之金牌。桂分高影。去陟日邊之粉署。蘭吐餘香。今者仰戀聖朝。遠銜王命。捧琛執贄。棧險航深。能獻款於表章。欲致誠於官守。雖無奉使。難在此時。九州之侯伯傾心。萬國之臣僚沮色。幸來弊鎭。得接淸規。況奉貴國大王特致書信相問。將成美事。不惜直言。儻員外止到淮壖。却歸海徼。縱得上陳有理。其如外議難防。無念東還。決爲西笑。聖主方深倚望。賢王佇荷寵榮。道路亦通。舟舡無壅。勿移素志。勉赴遠行。峽中寇戎。或聚或散。此亦專令防援。必應免致驚憂。且過鬱蒸。可謀征邁。館中有闕。幸垂示之。所來探候事。已令錄表申奏。敬惟鑑察。
Suddenly I received your official letter and saw your loyalty in full. I am comforted and content, and I look up to you and lean on you. It only deepens what I hold in my breast. You hold fragrance in the tree of the Secretariat (鷄樹) and received your excellence from Mount Ao. You came and climbed to the golden tablet above the heavens, where the cassia parts its high shadow. You went and mounted the powdered office beside the sun, where the orchid breathes out its lingering scent. Now, looking up in longing to the sage court, you bear your king's command from afar, holding up treasures and grasping gifts of introduction, crossing perilous plank roads and sailing deep water, able to offer your sincerity in a memorial and wishing to bring your loyalty to the post you hold. Though there is no mission to bear, the hardship lies in this hour, when the lords of the nine regions incline their hearts and the officials of ten thousand states lose their color. Happily you have come to this poor garrison and I have met your pure example, and still more, the great king of your country has sent a letter especially to ask after me. A fine thing is about to come about, and so I will not grudge plain words. If you should stop at the bank of the Huai and turn back to the sea frontier, then even if what you report above has reason in it, what of the talk outside that will be hard to stop? Do not think of going back east. Decide rather to smile toward the west. The sage sovereign leans on you in deep expectation, and your worthy king waits to receive the glory of that favor. The roads are open and the boats are not blocked. Do not shift your first purpose. Set out with effort on the far journey. The bandits in the gorges gather at times and scatter at times, but orders have been given here that they be guarded against and that help be sent, so you will surely be spared alarm and worry. Wait until the steaming heat has passed, and then plan to press on. If anything is lacking at your lodging, please let me know. The matters you came to inquire into I have already had written into a memorial and reported to the throne. I respectfully ask that you look into this.
