牒大夫。天芝稟秀。霜桂含貞。蔚爾芳猷。每見用和爲貴。凜然直氣。終能嫉惡如讎。信知賢良。實救凋弊。頃者再握一同之政。曾標三異之名。旣發縣花。佇分郡竹。而乃鵾鵬自滯。羔雁相從。鉅野卑栖。劍川遠役。察俗而唯資婉畫。犒師而不乏豐儲。果得入奏玉墀。出懸金印。洎某暫臨江陸。旋鎭海門。永言移節之難。咸假運籌之妙。一來淮甸。四換星霜。判官德以潤身。固爲己任。恩能濟物。不欲人知。莅事實繁。在公匪懈。筆直而吏多畏色。鞭輕而獄絶冤聲。見君子之盡心。實古人之用意。十二年之弘益。久而彌芳。千萬里之追從。永以爲好。雖將徐榻別設。猶恐燕臺未高。今已假小秩宗。兼大司憲。不遷職位。何稱官榮。幸屈跡於副車。冀揚威於戎幕。陳寵宣詔條無失。賞賴功曹。呂虔致郡俗永安。亦憑別駕。若言今日。彼在下風。事須請攝節度副使。表次錄奏。
A dispatch to the grand master. As the heavenly mushroom takes in what is finest and the frost-touched cassia holds what is upright, so his fragrant counsel is rich, and it shows always that he prizes harmony in what he does. His straight spirit is cold and clear, and in the end he can hate evil as an enemy. From this one knows truly that a worthy and good man is what saves a worn and broken age. In years past he held the government of a whole district a second time, and long ago his name was marked with the three wonders. He had already made the flowers of his county bloom, and men waited for him to be given the bamboo tally of a commandery. But the great bird held itself back, and lamb and goose went along together. He perched low at Juye and served far off at Jianchuan. In looking into local customs he relied only on gentle planning, and in feasting the troops he was never short of ample stores. So in the end he entered to report at the jade steps, and came out to hang a golden seal at his waist. When I came for a time to Jianglu and then guarded Haimen, and spoke of how hard it is to move the staff of office, I borrowed in every case the wonder of his laying of plans. Since he came to the Huai region, the stars and frosts have turned four times. The administrative assistant has made it his own charge to enrich himself with virtue, and he does good to others without wanting them to know it. The business he handles is truly heavy, yet in public duty he is never slack. His brush is straight, and the clerks often wear a frightened look. His whip is light, and in the prison no voice of wrong is heard. To see a gentleman spend his whole heart is truly what the men of old intended. Twelve years of wide help grow more fragrant the longer they last. A following of a thousand and ten thousand miles is made a friendship for good. Though I would set out a separate couch for Xu Zhi, I fear still that the terrace of Yan is not high enough. He has already been lent the post of junior master of rites and holds the office of grand censor besides. If his place is not moved up, what will match the honor of his office? I hope he will bend his steps to the second carriage and spread his authority in the army's tent. Chen Chong set forth the articles of the edict without fault, and his rewards owed much to his merit officer. Lü Qian brought lasting peace to the customs of his commandery, and he too leaned on his mounted aide. To speak of today, those men stand downwind of him. This matter must be a request that he act as deputy commissioner, to be entered in order in a memorial and reported.
