Gyewon Pilgyeongjip (A Plowing of the Brush in the Cassia Garden) Book 19 — Reports and Enclosures A collection Choe Chiwon made by choosing out of the writings of his four years in the headquarters of Gao Pian, military commissioner of Huainan under the Tang, binding them into twenty volumes and presenting them to King Heongang of Silla in 886. It holds 366 pieces — memorials and reports sent up to the emperor, the proclamation denouncing Huang Chao, letters to the several military commissioners, orders and dispatches issued to those under him, Daoist and Buddhist texts for services, funeral offerings, records written for the outer wall of Chengdu and for a painting of Annam, and the reports and poems he sent up to Gao Pian. Here is the first report, which begins "I am a man of Silla," and the proclamation against Huang Chao with its line, "Not only do all the men of the world think to kill you openly; the ghosts under the earth have already discussed cutting you down in secret." The last volume holds the poems he made on the voyage home to the country he had left at twelve. It is the oldest collection by a Korean that survives, and when Hong Seokju and Seo Yugu printed it with movable type in 1834 they called it "the root and the beginning of the writing of our Eastern Country." Their two prefaces are translated with it.

1Do not keep in your heart the small integrity of Chao Fu and Xu You

I submit this. I have looked up and studied your words of measure and have glanced at your nature and your conduct. A man can broaden the Way, and so a worthy servant puts first the bringing of his ruler to Yao and Shun. The age truly needs talent, and so a fine scholar is ashamed to copy Chao Fu and Xu You. In old days this was only handed down in books. Now all men look up to it at your gate of virtue. I humbly consider that you, Director, hold clarity within your great refinement and dwell in weight through the mean. You are already able to make all things solemn by your high name and to steady the age with whole virtue. You hold up a clear sky, so there is no cloud on the mountain peaks. You brighten the autumn colors, so there is a moon in the heart of the pool. Of late you cast aside the orchid of the powdered gate and took command of the bamboo and the red-shafted carriage. Going out, you shared the cares of the Son of Heaven. Coming, you consoled the hopes of the people by the sea. Moreover, in that commandery the households swallow the waters of Yue and the windows set out the hills of Wu. It caught the wind of Yuan Hong's raised fan, and the spirit waves drew back their anger. It made the road where Xie Lingyun bent his sail, and the fishing shore holds the spring. When the song of the five trousers was handed about and the fame of the hundred cash flowed abroad, you soon met with the ruler's rich favor and climbed far to a splendid post. With so fine a name for one who holds a treasure in his breast, who would raise the question of leading a state astray? In the right place for one who takes charge of treasures, your plan to set the country straight is awaited. Yet you took it as though startled, and you are upright without being haughty. You choose fine spots among rock-hung galleries and stream-side gates, and you seek your joy in wine and rhapsody, in zither and song. Will you listen long to the Son of Heaven emptying his heart for you, and bear to see the four quarters lose their hope? Now the owl's cry is about to stop, and the years of the phoenix rise once more. Fu Xuan of Jin, a man of rare gifts, waits to show how the south-pointing carriage is made, and the gathered longing of Wei Mou waits to spread its loyalty toward the north pole. You will enter to attend at the steps of the calendar plant, and you will sit and blend the plum in the cauldron. How should this stop at answering a dream of the moon? It must surely bring about a spring for all under heaven. If so, let the great plan that brings a ruler to Yao and Shun set the throne straight forever, and do not keep in your honored heart the small integrity that copies Chao Fu and Xu You. I sell mermaid-woven gauze from afar and am ashamed that it is not of heavy price. I hurry up to the curtain of Ma Rong and unworthily take a place among his students. My humble heart cannot bear the fullness of its clinging love, its prayer, and its awe. And so on.
