Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 4 — The Geunpok Collection A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

I your servant have been ill, the fever coming and going like the tide, so that in the forenoon I am a little clearer and in the afternoon badly dizzy. Yesterday afternoon a clerk of the Border Defense Council came with a secret draft report (啓草) and showed it to me, and when I looked at its purport it was to clear away the talk of others on behalf of the various commanders of the eastern campaign (東征) and to comfort their minds. It is no different from what I have been anxious about of late.

Now, having received your instruction, I have looked into it closely again. The affair of the Military Commissioner (經略) is indeed different from that of the Commander (提督), yet whether it is right or wrong to speak out about it from here is hard to settle in a single word. The intent of it is right as well. But to my mind there is no need to name each man one by one; it would seem that nothing need be amiss in putting it simply as that the various officials of the eastern campaign bore the Emperor's command and rescued a small country. Only I do not know whether this should be made a memorial (奏本) of its own or carried together in the memorial reporting on the enemy's situation; how such particulars should be handled I do not know.

As for the several points of Kim Su's (金睟) dispatch of the other day, I was dizzy with illness and could not look at them closely, nor does my thinking on them reach far enough; I should be grateful if the Border Defense Office (備局) were again made to deliberate well and dispose of them, so that nothing is left unfinished.
